Community and voluntary groups from across Great Yarmouth and Waveney are being encouraged to apply for their share of a £100,000 non recurrent funding pot to help them deliver schemes to improve people’s health and quality of life.

HealthEast, the area’s clinical commissioning group, has launched its Healthy Communities Fund in partnership with Voluntary Norfolk and Community Action Suffolk. Although the CCG is facing a considerable financial challenge, this funding is being awarded to help build resilience in communities and support local voluntary groups who make a vital contribution to local healthcare.

The fund gives groups the opportunity to apply for a grant of up to £5,000 towards projects which can demonstrate a link to improving health outcomes for local people. Applications from projects which help people manage long-term conditions, reduce isolation, boost mental health, support carers, promote healthy lifestyles and increase people’s physical activity will all be welcome.

Money could be used to purchase equipment, or pay for wages, running costs, training, volunteer expenses of travel costs. The projects must be completed before 1 March 2016 and must be sustainable once the funding has been used.

Projects to benefit from the fund in previous years include DIAL Great Yarmouth, which used the money sustain the service, Suffolk Befriending Scheme, which ran healthy eating and sports workshops for people with learning disabilities and Beccles Lido, which organised mother and toddler swimming lessons.

Rebecca Driver, Director of Engagement from HealthEast, said: “Improving the health and wellbeing of our local community is a priority for HealthEast, as not only will it help ensure people can live longer and happier lives but will also make them less likely to need long-term support from health services in the future.

“We are delighted to be working with our partners at Community Action Suffolk and Voluntary Norfolk to run this grant scheme. We would encourage any community or voluntary group with a great idea for improving the health and wellbeing of their local community to get in touch, make an application and see if we are able to give their project a welcome financial boost.”
