Equality, Diversity and Inclusion: With Gulshan Kayembe

- To develop a common understanding of diversity especially in the context of modern-day society and how this ‘definition’ applies within the context of a voluntary community sector organisation
- To unpick and understand unconscious bias, stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination and the impact these have on individuals and on society/communities more broadly – this will include dealing with the myths that exist in society
- To understand how barriers, including systemic and structural barriers, prevent fair access to services and opportunities for all members of our communities to become all that they could be
- To develop knowledge and understanding of the requirements of the Equality Act 2010
- To understand personal and professional responsibilities to promote fairness and equality how we can tackle prejudice and discrimination both in terms of the services we provide and in our workplaces.
By the end of the course you will:
- Understand stereotyping and bias and their impact on individuals and society
- Understand the main elements of the current equalities legislation and your responsibilities under this
- Begin the process of applying your understanding to your role and consider how you and your organisation can be do even more to promote equality, diversity and inclusion
- Feel more confident about identifying and challenging negative bias.
- Workbook with pre-course exercises – these will include key video material and some pre-reading as well as written and self-reflection exercises linked to the video and reading materials. These are not compulsory but participants are encouraged to work through these materials in preparation for the video conference as this will help to stimulate discussion and further questions to debate.
The workbook also includes useful references such as glossary, identifying unacceptable language, information about different religions, local stats around diversity etc.
- 2.5 hour video-conference – this will include a presentation but also discussions, Q&A and questions posed to participants to encourage dialogue, verbal or through the online ‘chat’ facilities. The case studies will be discussed and the trainer will explain which response or responses are appropriate and why.
- Post course references and further reading for interest and to deepen understanding but also as sign-posting for future reference should delegates need this at a later date.
- The trainer will be happy to answer questions and queries that participants have post the videoconference via e-mail – this will include any further or specific sign-posting that individuals may need or would find helpful.
- Post-video conference evaluation and self-reflection questions in the workbook.
Meet the trainer
Gulshan Kayembe has worked with schools, universities, a broad range of education authorities across the country and local councils as well as the police, health authorities and voluntary sector organisations to provide advice, guidance and training. Gulshan has extensive experience on teaching and learning and provides regular training on leadership development, diversity, recruitment and selection and good governance.
