Gambling harm prevention training for youth facing professionals: With GamCare

13th September 2021 @ 9:30 am 12:30 pm

Training for youth-facing professionals, focused on recognising risk factors, signs and symptoms of a gambling problem; talking to young people about gambling and signposting to help if needed; gaining skills to deliver interactive workshop around gambling and gambling harms.
Delivered by GamCare

This free training is provided by Gamcare who are a national provider of free information, advice and support for anyone affected by problem gambling.

In the last five years Gamcare has seen a 68% increase in the number of women contacting them for support, and yet they believe this still represents less than 1% women affected by gambling-related harm.

What’s the scope of the problem?
There are around 450,000 problem gamblers in the UK.  Gamcare’s National Gambling HelpLine takes 30,000 calls a year from men and women affected by gambling-related harm. Last year, over 7,000 people entered their free treatment services across the UK.

Think this doesn’t happen in Suffolk?
In 2017-18 the National Gambling HelpLine took over 600 calls from people giving a Suffolk postcode, and over 150 people from Suffolk entered treatment. Given that only a small proportion of those affected actually reach out, we believe the problem is much greater than it might appear.
