The Oak Tree Community Farm

Background

In the heart of its local community, The Oak Tree Community Farm is a vibrant hub for growing, learning, and connecting. The farm operates as a community supported agriculture (CSA) project, led by a small passionate team, that is closely supported by its members. Tom, one of the directors, explains that the farm currently supports around 100 local households, all of whom are members actively engaged in the project.

How the Farm Works

Every week, members receive seasonal vegetable boxes brimming with ultra-fresh produce. No two boxes are ever the same, reflecting the natural rhythm of the seasons, and the diversity of crops that are grown without use of artificial herbicides, pesticides, or fertilisers. An autumn box, for instance, might include potatoes, leeks, onions, kale, chard, cabbage, broccoli, and a variety of squashes, while spring and summer may bring a colourful mix of fresh greens, radishes, carrots, and salad crops.

To help members make the most of their veg, the farm also shares tried and tested recipes contributed by members themselves. These are organised by vegetable type, making it easy for people to find inspiration and build confidence in cooking with seasonal produce. The team also provides practical storage tips, helping minimise food waste while keeping vegetables fresh, nutritious, and tasty for as long as possible.

Who the Project Supports

The farm supports anyone in the local area interested in fresh, seasonal food and active participation in a caring community. While the focus is on maintaining a strong, engaged membership, the team encourages sharing knowledge and inspiring similar projects elsewhere. Participants gain practical gardening skills, improve their physical and mental wellbeing, and develop lasting friendships through shared work on the land.

Positives & Impact

One of the most important aspects of the farm’s success is the strong sense of community it has built. Members describe the farm as a welcoming, enjoyable place to spend time, where working alongside others fosters connection, wellbeing, and a sense of accomplishment.

Key weekly activities include harvesting and packing over 60 veg boxes on Mondays and Fridays. Members work together in all weathers, combining efficiency with camaraderie. This shared responsibility ensures produce is fresh for collection and strengthens bonds between participants, creating a supportive environment where people thrive.

Beyond food, the farm offers a largely outdoor, healthy space for people to unwind, learn new skills, and feel part of something meaningful. Recent collaborations, such as working with a PhD student on soil ecology, have enriched the land and boosted long-term sustainability, reflecting the farm’s commitment to learning and improvement.

Future Plans & Projects

The farm is focused on strengthening its infrastructure rather than expanding geographically. A new polytunnel is under construction, and plans are in place to increase storage capacity in 2026. Funding applications to the Sustainable Community Food Fund aim to install an off-grid solar PV system, supporting resilience and sustainability.

Struggles & Challenges

Like all farming projects,  Oak Tree Farm faces unpredictable weather, pests, plant diseases, and rodents. Operating off-grid adds complexity, with irrigation and energy needs requiring careful planning. These challenges are met with adaptability, problem-solving, and a hands-on approach, reflecting the team’s resilience and experience.

Help & Support Needs

Members of the public can support Oak Tree Community Farm in several ways:

  • Raising awareness – sharing the farm’s work and events through social media or local networks helps attract new members and volunteers.
  • Infrastructure support – assistance with funding applications  can enable improvements such as additional polytunnels, better storage, and upgraded irrigation systems.

Even small contributions, whether spreading the word or offering practical skills, help to ensure the farm continues to provide fresh food, learning opportunities, and a welcoming community space.

Key Learning

A major  lesson of the past year has been the importance of ongoing collaboration and adaptability. Working with specialist researchers and learning from hands-on experience has strengthened soil management, crop productivity, and community engagement, ensuring the farm continues to nourish both land and people.

How has  CAS helped?

CAS maintains an open line of communication with Oak Tree Farm through newsletters, network meetings, and social events. The farm has actively participated in  Food Network events created by CAS , including one in December, and  continued engagement is envisaged . This support not only aids the farm’s development, but also helps connect its services with like-minded charities and initiatives across Suffolk, expanding its impact and fostering collaboration.
