About the Network

Space to Thrive is a network of people who use an asset-based approach when working with and in communities across Suffolk. Network members include volunteers, professionals and residents with a common interest.

Communities know themselves best. They know their strengths, weaknesses, neighbours and local geography and are more than capable of deciding what is best for them. They might need a bit of support from time to time from outside sources to be able to move forward, but mostly they just need space to thrive. The aim of the network is to develop understanding and create this vital space for communities, and encourage them to use their assets and learn as they go, so they are in clear control of their projects.

It is also important that communities know that there is a network of support around them that they can call on and who to contact. It can be easy for those who can provide support to rush in, in a bid to be helpful, but this isn’t always best for the community as it removes confidence, autonomy and can negatively affect working relationships.

Community action is a journey that communities needs to take for themselves. Along the way they will learn, grow, build capacity and ultimately be more sustainable in the long term.

Meeting description

Our network meetings are an opportunity to meet with other members, hear about asset-based projects and share ideas. At our December meeting we will be hearing from the following speakers:

• Nicole Rickard – Head of Communities, East Suffolk Council
• Darren Kench – Community Network Developer (Central England), Eden Project Communities
• Ann Osborn – Project Manager, Rural Coffee Caravan

Anyone who is interested in finding out more about asset-based approaches is welcome to attend.
