National Pro Bono Week: How a local law firm has supported voluntary organisations

National Pro Bono Week (6 November 2017) is a nationwide campaign to amplify the range and impact of voluntary free legal advice that legal professionals provide ‘pro bono’ – for the public good – every year.

At a local level, Suffolk ProHelp is a countywide network of businesses which provides professional and strategic support free of charge to voluntary organisations, not just legal advice.

Prettys is one of East Anglia’s larger law firms and a recognised leader in both commercial law and personal law, with wide-ranging experience acting on behalf of both UK and non-UK clients. The firm is committed to playing an active role in its local community and encourages staff of all levels to participate in community activities.

Through Suffolk ProHelp, Prettys has acted for a playgroup on the grant of a new lease, which included advising the playgroup on the terms of the lease and arranging the completion of the lease with the landlord’s solicitors. Prettys has also provided employment advice to an arts charity, which included drafting a standard contract of employment and an employee handbook and advising the charity on governance issues.

Ian Seeley, Head of CSR at Prettys, said:

“As a socially-responsible business, we are keen to support voluntary and community groups by providing advice to groups that would not otherwise be able to access our services. It can be all too easy for organisations that are not properly advised to be caught out by legal issues; identifying and dealing with these issues at an early stage enables groups to avoid potentially significant risks and to focus on their core work in the community.”
