Community Action Suffolk, Clare Town Council and Hastoe Housing Association worked in partnership to deliver this affordable Housing scheme on land previously owned by Pies Hill Farm Limited.
In 2009, Community Action Suffolk (previously Suffolk ACRE) undertook a Housing Needs Survey in the Parish. The survey had a 44% return rate, and the need indicated was 7.2% of respondents.
The recommended number and mix of properties to meet the need was for 10-12 homes ranging between one, two & three bedroomed flats, bungalows for rent & shared ownership.
11 new affordable homes for the village of Clare were officially opened by James Cartlidge MP on Monday 21 September 2015.
Work started on the new affordable homes, in February 2014 and comprise of nine for rent and two for shared ownership, completed in May 2015. The homes are a mix of 1 bed and 2-bed flats, 2-bed bungalows and 3-bed houses.
All of the homes were prioritised for people with a local connection to the parish of Clare. Giving them the opportunity of either renting or purchasing a property in the town which they would not otherwise have been able to afford.
This development was built with support from the Homes and Communities Agency.
The Town Council decided on the name Aragon Court. This name was decided because Clare Common is the site of the former Manor of Erbury which, following demolition of the extensive manorial building many centuries ago, has been used continuously as grazing land. It was originally leased to the people of Clare by Catherine of Aragon (the first of Henry VIII’s six wives) to be used as a Common Pasture for poor people. It is now administered as a local charity.
